The Quartz family is one of the largest in the gemstone world and it is the most abundant and common mineral used for jewellery. It can be found all over the world and the two main varieties are Cryptocrystalline Quartz and Crystalline Quartz. The most important distinction between them is that with Crystalline Quartz the individual crystals are visible to the naked eye, whereas high magnification is needed to see the crystals within cryptocrystalline varieties. Quartz can be a confusing stone, as it encompasses a great many varieties that often are thought to be gemstones on their own, but are in fact another type of Quartz and to confuse things further, within the quartz family are other gemstones which have their own “families” as well.

The name Quartz comes from the Greek, “krystallos,” meaning ice. The Greeks and the Romans believed that Quartz was in fact ice that had been made by the gods because it couldn’t melt.
The use of Quartz dates back thousands of years. Roman soldiers used it to capture sunlight for cauterizing wounds, and the Roman ladies carried Quartz crystal balls to cool their hands in warm weather. The practice of burying crystals with the dead has also been popular with many cultures as it is believed the spirit of the dead lives on in the crystals.
