Angelite, or Angel Stone is the polished form of Anhydrite, a mineral which is formed from Celestite that has been compressed for many millions of years and forms in sedimentary rock layers. It contains no water in its structure, hence its name is derived from the Greek ‘anhydras’ meaning ‘without water’. It is opaque and light blue or light blue-grey in colour.
It is a soft mineral which will convert into Gypsum and may deteriorate when wet or if immersed in water so Angelite jewellery should not be worn while bathing or swimming.
Angelite is found in Austria, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Peru and USA.
Traditional legends, gemstone folklore and healing properties
Angelite was discovered in Germany in 1794 but was not named until 1804 when a German geologist who named it Anhydrite in reference to the lack of water in its composition.
Angelite is considered a stone of protection and awareness and is said to heighten perception. It is also believed to help in communication with the Angelic Realm and Animal Spirit guides, and some say that it enhances telepathic communication, helps in self expression, allows us to speak our mind, and helps us to become more assertive. It is also said that it makes one more compassionate and accepting of things which cannot be changed, and has a calming effect.
Angelite is a powerful stone for healers who use it to alleviate inflammation of the throat, balance the thyroid, balance the body’s fluids, repair tissue and blood vessels, and it is also considered as an aid to weight control.
It is not a traditional birthstone but it is said to be a good gemstone for those born under the zodiac signs of Libra and Aquarius.
