Traditional legends, gemstone folklore and healing properties of Amethyst
Ancient Mesopotamian civilizations highly valued Amethyst and so did the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. It is said to have one of the widest range of miraculous powers of any of the precious stones. It was thought of as a stone of the mind and could create clarity of thought – Leonardo da Vinci believed that it could dispel evil thoughts and quicken the intelligence.
Many believe that it possesses the power of inducing dreams and visions, can calm the emotions, assist in attaining wisdom, give contentment, healing and peace, awaken spirituality, give happiness, love and intuition.
It has also long been regarded as an aid to sobriety and useful for combating alcohol, food, and other addictions and so believed to ease compulsive/obsessive behaviour.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February and the gemstone for the sixth wedding anniversary.
